Second annual “Let them eat cake” event following wreath laying 7/14

First annual French Market Waiters race 7/18


(New Orleans, July 12, 2010)—Come to the French Market the morning of Bastille Day, this Wednesday, July 14, 2010, for free festivities in honor of France’s day of independence, commemorating the 1789 storming of the Bastille in Paris that launched the French Revolution. (Note!! The Waiters Race originally scheduled for July 11th was rescheduled for July 18th due to rain. Please see details below!!)


July 14th Schedule (FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC):

  • 10 a.m. Procession with brass band and French characters Napoleon, Joan of Arc, Moulin Rouge girl, Marie Antoinette and others. Begins at Washington Artillery Park (across from Jackson Square, near Café du Monde) and ends at Dutch Alley. This short procession will lead the public down Decatur Street to Dumaine, into Dutch Alley to the Pavilion.
  • 10: 15 a.m. Welcoming Ceremony at Dutch Alley Performance Pavilion. Enjoy remarks by the following:


Welcome: Mme Brigitte Gomane Scaramuzzo, President, Council of French Societies

Speakers: M. Olivier Brochenin, Consul Général de France

M. Ken Ferdinand, Executive Director of the French Market Corporation

Mme Jacqueline Clarkson, New Orleans City Council Member-at-Large


  • 10:30 a.m.  Group walks across street to Joan of Arc statue at St. Phillip and Decatur, where a wreath is laid in honor of Bastille Day.
  • 10:40 a.m. Singing of La Marseillaise by Don Hoffman (public can join in; we will have programs with La Marseillaise lyrics printed)
  • 10:45 a.m. Parisian café music live with Norbert Slama Trio at the Market Café, just behind the statue.
  • 11:00 a.m. Cutting of the cake by Marie Antoinette. Second annual LET THEM EAT CAKE! event with free cake for the public and free champagne while supplies last.
  • Dance,drink and enjoy the music. Have breakfast or lunch at the Market Café.
  • 11:30 a.m. Music ends. Happy Bastille Day!
